One way to make sustainability work is to work together.
That’s what University of Pennsylvania and local restaurants have been doing to re-use waste and save money for everyone.
The University invested $100,000 to renovate its recycling center and install a composting facility for food scraps from the nearby restaurants. The composted material is used by a local school as a soil additive.
But the real payout is money. By reducing the amount of solid waste, the University and the restaurants have reduced their waste hauling charges by 30%.
No wonder it’s a success; everybody wins.
