On April 23rd, 2011 at 9AM PDT my daughter and I will help set a world record on the most cloth diapers changed simultaneously.  This effort is in association with The Great Cloth Diaper Change 2011.  Why does my family choose to use cloth diapers?  We greatly reduce the amount of waste from our household that ends up in landfills where over 92% of all single-use diapers end up. No one knows exactly, but it is estimated to be about 250-500 years before a disposable diaper decomposes. Did you know that Americans throw away 570 diapers per second? That’s 49 million diapers per day! For those of you that say I’m using more water – well the amount of water and process energy that goes into making one diaper far outweighs the water and energy I am using to clean diapers.  Health and cost are other reasons why we use cloth, but in light of Earth Day and every day it is important to understand the huge environmental impacts.
