Reduce construction waste

Depending on who you ask, 25 to 50 percent of waste in landfills is construction waste. However, reducing construction waste is not impossible. Our Construction team in Washington, DC, recycled 72 percent of all building material waste from a sampling of 42 renovation and tenant fit-out projects in 2010.  The total 1232.54 tons of construction waste included 302 tons of metal, 165 tons of wood and 313 tons of drywall gypsum.

The key was to implement a serious waste and recycling program, hold everyone accountable for following recycling protocols, and carefully monitor results.

Yes, there’s a little more work involved, but the extra effort was amply rewarded. Now we just need to work on that other 28 percent.
