While many of us at JLL have joined the cause to save energy in the workplace by supporting green building technology, retailer IKEA encourages us to take that attitude home!

IKEA, the world’s largest furniture retailer, will begin selling photovoltaic (PV) solar panels at UK stores.  For about £5,700 (or $9200) a family can purchase a package of solar panels for their home that includes installation and maintenance.  With this system, customers can estimate a payback of 7 years.

The UK provides a great environment for IKEA to test out their new sustainable product.  Government subsidy programs, mid-level electricity prices, and a rising solar market make these solar panels more attractive to British consumers.

IKEA strives to use 100% clean energy by 2020! And they hope to help their consumers reach their own personal sustainability goals by providing them with these new solar resources.

Very cool! Any plans to bring this to the US as well? I’m assuming the system supplements existing utility feed, does it then allow for the house to maintain power during a utility outage?
