What happens when we set out to make a building greener and more productive at the same time?

Something amazing.

The Federal Building in San Diego decided to make a number of changes … with pretty impressive results.

First, they changed their fluorescent lighting from T12s with flickering magnetic ballasts to more energy-efficiency T8s with electronic ballasts. Second, the brought in more daylight and improved acoustics.

What happened?

Productivity went up 3% in office areas and improved 15% in courthouses, correctional areas and post office spaces.  The financial impact from improved productivity … $1.3 million per year.

Oh, and they achieve $275,000 in lower energy costs.
