JLL’s Dan Probst and Sarah Nicholls are joining world leaders and experts from the private and public sectors at the United Nations climate conference – known as COP21 – in Paris. Check back daily for Dan and Sarah’s live updates throughout the conference.
This past week, leaders from around the globe started coming together in Paris to engage in meaningful climate change discussions. There has been a lot of hype surrounding these talks, known as COP21. There is also plenty of optimism because of the high probability of seeing a strong climate deal.
Next week, more experts from the public and private sectors will join the conversation. Myself and Sarah Nicholls, JLL’s Head of Global Corporate Sustainability, will be among those participating in discussions that will demonstrate that the business community is supportive of a climate treaty that will lead to real change.
Reaching agreement in Paris is a significant first step toward putting us on the right path to reduce the impact of greenhouse gas emissions on our climate. Much work has been done leading up to this point and much more will need to be done in the months and years ahead. It is widely accepted that the built environment is part of the problem and thus represents a key area of opportunity to meet the commitments that may be made by government leaders in Paris. Right now, the focus is on active participation – hearing the discussions first-hand and joining the conversations.
As an organization committed to ensuring our long-term sustainability, we have an obvious interest in the outcome. We’re also acutely aware of the enormous potential we have to make a difference by helping our clients adopt strategies that reduce the environmental impact of their real estate while also saving them money. We’re all in this together. Nobody can solve this problem on their own and nobody will be immune from the impacts of inaction. We’re encouraged by what we’ve seen so far with negotiators logging many hours to develop language to be examined next week.
I invite you to follow along with us here next week as we participate in these important discussions. We’ll be providing updates, sharing insights and letting you know what’s on people’s minds as we work toward our goal of a sustainable future.
