Well-being in the workplace: Why it’s more important than you think

It’s easy to lose sight of qualities like mindfulness, gratitude, and happiness at work – especially when you’re already stressed to the max with a tough workload and tight deadlines. But recent research tells a different story: that fostering an environment of well-being in your workplace has implications beyond simply lightening the office mood.

What do you think of when you hear words like “mindfulness,” “gratitude” or “happiness”? Probably not the corporate world, where productivity and profitability are almost always top-of-mind. What role, then, does well-being play in creating a sustainable workplace? And how can a focus on workplace happiness contribute to the bottom line?

Conventional wisdom tells us that, “If I work hard, I will be successful – and that will make me happy.” But experts today actually suggest that the opposite is true: “If I am happy, I will work hard and gain success.”

The science of happiness supports this line of thinking. When you feel positive, dopamine floods the brain – which activates your brain’s learning centers, increasing intelligence, creativity, energy levels, resilience, productivity and your overall sense of well-being in the process. Happiness is also a contagious, collective phenomenon – which simplifies the task of creating a true culture of happiness in the workplace. … Read More

Why sustainability matters to the CEO

Each year, the GreenBiz Forum brings leaders from the business community together to discuss key sustainability trends, strategies and best practices. JLL’s Dan Probst, Global Chairman of Energy and Sustainability, will attend the forum alongside Colin Dyer, JLL’s President and CEO. Below, Dan discusses why sustainability is important to the C-Suite – as both a core value and as a strategic priority.

There’s no question that a well-designed sustainability strategy can bring significant value to an organization. But senior leaders and other executives must constantly juggle competing business priorities, choosing to dedicate time and resources to a few key programs at the expense of others. Why should sustainability top the C-Suite’s list of strategic priorities?

  • For firms like JLL, where sustainability services are a key component of our offering, sustainability is a business – we make money at it, and we save money for our clients.
  • More and more, clients – both investors and corporations in the real estate world – have established and publicly stated their sustainability objectives. As a result, they increasingly seek real estate solutions that can help them to achieve these objectives – whether through alternative energy services, smart building solutions, or other sustainable practices.

Stuart Thomson Gulliver, CEO HSBC, at the UN Caring for Climate event

It’s post-COP21 for JLL and I am exhausted. It’s the good kind, though. It’s the “there were so many inspiring ideas and stimulating conversations” kind of exhaustion. It’s the “I want to start making things happen yesterday” kind of exhaustion. And even better is that my exhaustion comes from momentum. From positivity. From leaders – big leaders (such as HSBC CEO Stuart Thomson Gulliver, shown at right) – who get it.

The ‘it’ here is climate change, and as Dan summarized yesterday, these big leaders speak about climate change in terms of business value, economic opportunity and innovation. They also speak about it as a way to stay competitive. And heck, as a way to exist in the long term as a business.… Read More

Greetings from Day 3 at COP21. Overall, optimism remains high that history is being made as countries from around the world move closer to a global agreement. I continue to be amazed at the level of business participation at these events and the number of corporate CEOs (many of them our clients) who are actively participating. It’s fun to hear a CEO talk about the value of converting to LED lighting.… Read More

IMG_3540I woke up today even more excited for Day 2. If you haven’t read Dan’s Day 1 recap yet, I encourage you to catch up with us. COP21 is filled with lots of energy and fun, too – it’s great to see us business folk, all suited up, pedal a bike to make our own smoothies or charge our iPhones.

Dan and I started our day at the Sustainable Innovation Forum (SIF). By lunchtime we’d taken in so much great information to share. We had an interesting morning session with the businessmen and aviators of Solar Impulse. With pilot jackets in tow, they explained how they were repeatedly told that a solar-powered flight around the world was impossible. Solar Impulse prevailed by going about the solution in a different way. Sounds familiar, right? Most want change, but don’t want to change.… Read More
